From Italy a late Renaissance 16th century religious painting depicting the Child Saint John The Baptist with a Lamb by an Italian artist of Lombard School, Mannerist period. Antique oil on canvas, an original first canvas painting of St. John the Baptist as a child seated near the lamb, with a large Cross with a winding white ribbon inscribed Ecce Agnus Dei, which translated from Latin means Lamb of God, refers to the Passion of Christ, who gave himself as a sacrifice, as was done in Judaism with lambs, to save men from sin.
St. John the Baptist is presented as an almost cherubic child a beautiful face with brown eyes, ruby red lips and golden wavy hair. He wears a scarlet red drape, seated near a stream, holding a water cup he is baptizing the lamb, symbol of innocence. Both the halo and the dove are messages of love and strengthen the intense mysticism of the scene.
The light is concentrated on the figures in the foreground, leaving the trees and the hilly landscape in the shade, un undefined coat of arms is painted on the left side of the composition.
