17th Century Renaissance Pair Of Italian Caryatids Large Scale Wall Sculptures
5.000,00€
The caryatids show old conservative restorations with minor additions consistent with the age of 1600, are in a good age related condition, with a beautiful dark patina.
The two figures with long hair are asexual, have an Ionic capital on their heads. Both torsos have adopted an original solution to compensate for the lack of arms by grafting two volutes, two curls facing the pectorals, onto the shoulders. Below the relaxed bellies, drapery in one and volutes in the other connect the figures to the carved pilaster strip. In the middle section, there are two different high relief fruit compositions.
The caryatid is a female figure as a support architectural element, with a decorative function of architraves, balustrades, balconies, shelves. The caryatid was also widely used in the decoration of furniture, sometimes completely detached from its supporting functions, only for ornamental motifs purpose.
