Pair of 1800s Italian Bucolic Watercolor Landscapes
1.500,00

A pair of 1800s watercolor landscapes depicting bucolic and idealized Italian landscapes. The style strongly evokes classical vedutismo and the idealized landscape typical of 18th- and 19th-century European painting, with influences ranging from the Italian Arcadian tradition to Flemish and French genre painting, inspired by masters such as Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. The two paintings are unsigned; they are works by an unknown artist, conceived as a pair—works created to be displayed together, mirroring each other in composition and consistent in color palette, atmosphere, and lighting.
In the landscape on the left, dense vegetation dominates the foreground, featuring large, leafy trees with gnarled trunks. In the lower right corner, a small body of water or stream flows, surrounded by detailed bushes, among which a plant with blue-gray hues stands out. In the middle ground, we see a path winding toward the center-left of the composition, where two human figures—travelers or shepherds—are visible, walking with their backs to the viewer, dressed in period clothing; one wears a red cloak. Further to the right, a solitary, slender tree serves as a counterpoint to the cluster of trees on the left. In the distant background, partially hidden by the hills, a classical building or a fortified village can be glimpsed beneath a blue sky streaked with large white and gray clouds.
In the landscape on the right, the compositional structure is the reverse of that in the first painting. Here, the large central tree is on the left side, stretching its branches toward the center. The ground is rocky and bordered by a dirt path. At the center of the scene, along the path, two figures are depicted taking a break: a man sitting on the ground and another standing beside him, wrapped in a blue cloak, who appears to be pointing the way or conversing. In the background, along the same path, two other small figures can be seen walking. The perspective opens up to a valley dominated in the center by a large noble villa or castle of classical architecture, situated at the foot of mountains fading into the distance. The sky is bright, consistent with that of the twin painting.
In both landscapes, earth tones, the intense greens of the foliage, and the vivid blues of the sky dominate. The touches of vibrant color—the red and blue of the travelers’ clothing—are strategically placed to draw the viewer’s eye toward the narrative focal points. The light is diffused and natural, typical of a clear day or late afternoon, and creates a strong sense of atmospheric depth and aerial perspective.
The paintings are unframed and reveal the raw edges of the cardboard support. There is minimal color loss in the foliage of the plants, and we notice a slight halo of dirt in the upper left portions of both landscapes. The rendering of the foliage and naturalistic details reveals an expert artisanal hand, attentive to conveying the sense of volume and the idyllic, timeless atmosphere of the countryside of days gone by.
