French Empire Burl Thuya Wood Fire Screen With Gilt Bronze Mounts 1810 circa

An elegant French Empire solid and veneered burl thuya wood fireplace screen, a high-quality écran à coulisse with gilt bronze mounts circa 1810 and coming from a luxury Italian villa at Como lake.

The screen panel, in pleated gold silk edged with gilded bronze frame with palmette decorations. The central screen is flanked by extraordinary partially fluted side columns, hand-carved, hollow solid burl columns, lovely embellished with cast bronze elements, acanthus foliate chiseled and fire gilded bronze Corinthian capitals, having leafted decorated collars raised on curved solid burl double legs ending with bronze monopodium feet.

Hollowed columns for placing lead counterweight for the screen vertical sliding, the mechanical device, it is a so called écran à coulisse; this French work is characterized by such a high-quality wood carving and superb chasing, engraving and mercury gilding that must be made by a great maitre-ébéniste of Empire period.

This Empire fireplace screen was formerly part of the furnishings of a private Lombard Villa at Como Lake.
