18th Century Italian Roman View Engraving by Giuseppe Vasi Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Giuseppe Vasi Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore drawn and engraved by Giuseppe Vasi (1710-1782) in the second half of the 1700s, who was one of the most important engravers of views in 18th-century Rome and was Piranesi’s teacher. The view is plate 48 from the fourth volume of Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna (The Magnificence of Ancient and Modern Rome), published in 1757. It is etched on laid paper and is in good condition. The lower caption describes the monumental features of the view: 1. Collegio de PP Penietzieri della Basilica; 2. Bell tower; 3. Monastery of the Filippine Nuns; Rectory of the Basilica of S.M. Maggiore. In good condition within a modern frame.
