The outline of a thin circular halo is visible above his head. The iconography strongly suggests a depiction of Saint Peter the Penitent (typically portrayed as an elderly man, bearded, and in tears or prayer) or, alternatively, a hermit saint or apostle. This is an antique painting on canvas with widespread losses in the lower portion.
