Very decorative pair of blue and white vases from the famed majolica production town of Savona, in Liguria region, Italy. Decorated all round with figural scenes with a seated woman and cherubs. Castles and mountains are in the background. The top of the vase is ornated with acanthus leaves and vegetal patterns. Relief Faun masks are beneath the curved handles, rolling up like ribbons on the body of the vase. The circular pedestal base is ornamented with more acanthus leaves and geometrical motifs.
Blue rooster mark on the bottom.
The Savona production is very similar to Genoa and Albisola manufactures and made some of the best majolica in all of Europe since the 1500’s. Period pieces are highly valued. The classic blue and white pottery is mostly what Savona was known for, and production has continued for hundreds of years.
This more recent pair of hand-painted vases, dating back to mid 20th century is in good condition and comes from a private palazzo in Milan.
