Pair of 18th Century Italian Louis XV Altar Giltwood Frames With Mercury Mirror
A pair of 18th century carved and gilt wood altar cards or cantagloria from Italy.
Mercury mirror plates have replaced lyturgical inscriptions and these antique Italian small frames used as decorative antique mirrors. Shaped, with scrolling and vegetal deep carving, they are realized in cembran pinewood and have an original gold leaf gilding and are in good condition, coming from a private Italian collection.
In Italy this antique artworks have been placed on the altar only during Mass and they usually contain the prayers that the priest recites during the Mass.
A small hole in the lower part of both frames shows a past use as wall-lights.
