This is an antique etching dating back to early 19th century, in good age related condition, made by Camillo Lambertini, famous engraver born in Bologna by the end of XVIII century and colored by the French painter Chasselat (1753/1814).
The story is the following:
Laura is a young girl obliged by her mother to marry the Duke of Sade.
Francesco Petrarca is one of the most important poet in Italian literature ( born in Tuscany 1304/1374 ). Laura and Petrarca are lovers.
Laura is so sad for being obliged to marry the Duke that she gets very ill and she is near to die. As soon as Petrarca knows that she is dying he asks the doctor what could be done. As no medicines could save her life, the doctor asks Petrarca to play his lute and to sing his poetical verses written for Laura. The miracle happens, Laura suddenly opens her eyes and says: ” Petrarca ….it’s you! “. The doctor says: ” she is alive! ” and Petrarca, excited, fells fainted.
