“Capriccio” is a world borned at the end of the Renaissance and has several meanings with a common thread. Capriccio is an architectural fantasy, a stirring of the soul, or more precisely, a stimulation of the imagination that gave rise to all manner of mental images. From a pictorial standpoint, there is no doubt that the Capriccio genre developed in the Eternal City during the early decades of the 17th century and drew inspiration from the ruins of classical antiquity.
The canvas essentially features ruins as its subject, as the landscape in the distant background plays a secondary role in the composition. The unidentified ruins serve here as an evocative motif; that is, they draw on their emotional potential to depict imaginary landscapes. The scene is symbolically observed by a Roman knight positioned at the center of the composition, standing beside a white horse, with two beggars seated on a pile of ruins and rubble in the foreground, as if to underscore the decline of the classical world.The painting has been lined and mounted on a new stretcher; it was restored around 2010 and features some painted restorations. The 19th-century French frame, made of gilded wood and pastille, measures 125 cm by 142 cm. The canvas alone measures 90 cm in height by 113 cm in width.
