De Gheyn Jacob Armed Soldier Antique Print 1607 circa, antique etching depicting a soldier in military uniform featuring an important example of the engraving art of the late Mannerist period. De Gheyn, a Dutch painter and engraver and one of the most influential Flemish artists of his time, devoted much of his career to depicting military subjects, a theme that was particularly relevant in 17th-century Europe characterized by conflict and war.
The print is part of the work Wapenhandelinghe van Roers, Musquetten ende Spiessen, a manual on the exercise of arms that not only offers instruction on the use of weapons, but also serves as a historical document that can provide information on the customs and lives of soldiers of that era. The engravings in the volume illustrate a wide range of military figures, with particular attention to the details of uniforms and weapons, reflecting tactical and military developments following theUnion of Utrecht in 1579.
The central figure of this Baroque work, the halberd-wielding armiger, symbolizes not only power and nobility, but also an era in which innovative war strategies and infantry organization, promoted by figures such as Maurice Count of Nassau, transformed the landscape of battles in Europe.
The paper sheet measures mm. 355 x 230 and is in good condition and is presented within an ivory board.
