A carved and gilded wooden frieze featuring a striking monogram with the letter B, characterised by an exquisitely Rococo style. This antique decorative element, carved from poplar and gilded, is crowned by a large central stylised shell or fan, a classic motif of Rococo design, flanked by curling volutes that lend a sense of verticality. At the centre stands out a smooth cartouche housing an elaborate intertwined monogram. The letters appear to be a B and perhaps an M (it is unclear whether this is a decorative element), rendered in sinuous, calligraphic lines. The lower section is the most complex. It features a grotesque mask or a feral face (resembling a lion or a mythological creature) with wings spread out at the sides. This element serves as a visual base and adds a touch of solemnity and symbolic protection. The entire piece is dominated by ‘C’ and ‘S’ curves, typical of the 18th century, which create a sense of continuous movement. There are no straight lines; every edge is moulded, crumpled or swollen. There is an interesting contrast between the smooth, glossy surfaces of the gilding and the stippled or punched areas (such as the background behind the monogram and the latticework details on the sides), which serve to highlight the relief through the play of shadows.
In terms of its shape and structure, this frieze may have come from the cornice of a picture frame or mirror, or it may be a decorative element placed above an entrance to indicate the ownership of the family identified by the monogram. It is a high-quality piece of craftsmanship that conveys opulence, prestige and a taste for intricate ornamentation, typical of 18th-century European aristocratic residences or their 19th-century revivals. It is carved from poplar wood and is in good condition with minimal losses consistent with its dating to the first half of the 1800s and its Italian origin.
