A Grand Tour rare souvenir from Italy featuring Duomo di Milano, Milan Cathedral Gothic Church in Milan and the Dom Square (Piazza del Duomo), made by Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome in 1860 circa. The work depicts a Cathedral front view and the Coperto del Figini on the left side and buildings on the left. This very rare subject is a Milanese Dom Square view crowded by figures, carriages with horses and it is inspired to the Milan’s Cathedral drawing by Samuel Prout (1783-1852) and William Wallis Duomo di Milano etching of 1830 circa. Compared to the original view, the perspective of this minute mosaic is wider, with an excellent quality and richness of the details. In the back of the item, there is the red original label of the Reverenda Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano, the reference number and the title, Duomo di Milano and the price, lire 1500. This antique Italian micro mosaic is set in a black marble from Bergium and framed, it is in good age related condition, showing old restorations. It comes from a family private collection in Lombardy and dates back to 1860 circa. It looks like a painting, the workmanship is so fine. Thousands of tiny glass tesserae. The great majority of Italy’s Grand Tour souvenirs focus on just a single monument or view, mainly of Rome, the Eternal City or Neapolitan landscapes, Pompei ruins. But this Milanese view is a really rare and unique subject. Founded in 1576, the Vatican Mosaic Workshop was originally tasked with reproducing, in minute, colored glass tiles, many of the Vatican’s old master paintings which, already then, had begun to deteriorate.
