From Italy, this fabulous, beautifully hand-carved walnut wood trunk was made in the 1600s. The top and sides have no decoration, reserving the attention for the elaborate front panel, with Coat of Arms of Pesenty family in Bergamo, a crowned eagle and a scale. caryatids carving on each side. This antique walnut figural cassone chest-trunk, this ornately carved chest, also known as a marriage chest, is of Lombard origin, Bergamo, comes from a private collection of Milan an is in good condition. On the front, in the center, we find the family crest with a crowned eagle and a bolt with chains. The two side panels of the front are veneered in walnut burl and surrounded by a double order of frames. On the sides two caryatids, one male and one female. In the lower part, an important ribbed frame rests on two bracket feet. The sides are without carvings. The opening top: eyelets of the hinges are missing and therefore strips have been placed under the lid to center the support.
This Italian trunk is typical of late Renaissance pieces from the 1600s and it will definitely be a topic of conversation wherever it is placed.
