17th century Italian Martyrdom of Saint Andrew
A late 17th century Italian school oil on canvas painting, depicting the Crucifixion of Apostle Saint Andrew, relined and unframed.
An old man stands before a wooden cross, while a Saracen is binding him on the left side of the composition, he is about to be crucified. This antique Italian work, based on an apparently simple compositional scheme, is full of emotional content.
The man is portrayed more than half-length with his torso bare and his hair and beard white from age. With his left arm he holds an X-shaped cross, which allows us to identify him as the apostle Saint Andrew; moreover, there is a luminous aura in the dark background.
The anatomy of the figure of the saint, his body, his look upward, resigned, all produce a very effective emotional atmosphere. Saint Andrew´s intensely contemplative expression and the cross are related through the process of suffering and martyrdom.
The antique Italian religious painting is in good condition and shows old restorations.
It comes from a Milanese private collection.
