Old Fisherman with Child Early 20th Century Italian Painting
Early 20th century oil on canvas painting, depicting a fisherman with a child, an old fisherman rowing with the help of a child, we suppose his granddaughter. In good condition except some small scratches, This lovely work is signed lower left in the corner with the unreadable monogram of the painter. The picture is unframed and comes from a private residence of Milan but the origin is Southern Italy.
The fisherman is frontally portrayed , with a red cap, while he is rowing, sitting in the boat behind a child with pink dress, probably his nephew, wielding the oars and holding her hands close to those of his grandfather. The family atmosphere and the deep emotional feeling are underlined by the contact between the two subjects and by the benevolent smile of both.
This portrait is a work of Southern tradition that emphasizes the realistic appearance of the character. The child smiles amused with the typically infant expression of the open mouth; whereas the fisherman is depicted with simple clothes and dirty hands, but nothing undermines the sense of serenity and complicity of the two figures. Although being a marine, landscape in the background and the sea are just mentioned, the painting is centered on the relationship of the two characters in the foreground and amplifies the complicity between the two generations.
