Italian 19th Century Braided Straw Basket Rome View Lid Gold Trim Leather Handle
An Italian straw work basket from Bologna, a fantastic, original Napoleonic era Prisoner of War straw work basket. Decorated all over with intricately patterned straw covered case, a geometrical braided straw marquetry on an oval board structure. The wooden lid features a detailed marquetry depicting a view of Rome. Gold trim leather handle and lining paper inside and at the bottom.
Handmade in Italy, in Bologna, Emilia Romagna region, dating back to the first decade of 19th century during Napoleon’s dominance over Italian states, this oval shaped, hand-realized lidded basket with arched handle was once used for sewing, weaving or knitting works.
The wooden lid is centered with a view of Rome, an oval marquetry veneer work. Lovely repoussé gilt brass decoration are applied at the base of the handle.
Paper lining interior. Cardboard bottom.
This basket is wonderful as a decorative object or an unusual storage solution. Basket making is an ancient and humble craft, but in the hands of a skilled artisan a simple basket can become a truly beautiful work of art.
In good condition, with an original lock, missing key.
Minor straw losses and damages, a small veneer missing on the left side of the oval Rome view on the lid, see close up picture details, wear consistent with use and age, fading to the exterior.
