20th Century Italian White Marble Female Portrait Relief with Crescent Moon
An oval Italian Carrara marble relief plaque, an early 20th century hand-carved marble profile lady portrait, depicting a female head, possible Artemis or Diana Goddes, a woman with long wavy hair tied with a ribbon behind her neck, portrayed in profile facing right and looking to the sky. The tiny attribute of the crescent moon on her head suggests Artemis or Diana, goddess of the moon. This figure is not depicted according to classical Greek iconography, but with a romantic inspiration. The sculpture has been cleaned and is in good age related condition, showing signs of wear and minor chips on the edge.
