19th Century Italian Landscapes with Ruins Set of Two
Pair of Italian landscapes with ruins, 19th century tempera on canvas paintings with architectural ruins, classical figures, two very decorative Italian paintings featuring a green-blue tempera landscape.
One depicts the fortified walls of a city, a drum and the dome of a church and in the foreground on the left the architectural ruins of a Corinthian colonnade. The scenary is animated by shepherds with sheep and cows and two boys fishing on the banks of a small lake. The second painting is characterized by the overhang of a cliff in a deep wooded landscape crowded by hunters and travelers.
The unknown Italian author from Northern Italy obtains with quick brushstrokes a decorative sense full of imaginary composition taken from classical antiquity; the architectures and ruins infested by vegetation are used as theatrical scenes of a motionless landscape animated by figures of antique memory.
Both works are unframed, come from a private Milanese collection, relined and with a new stretcher, they are in good condition except minor scratches as can be seen in the listed closed-up pictures.
