1923 Italian antique painting Harvest by Battaini
A large oil on canvas painting by Rino Gaspare Battaini (Milano 1898 – Rapallo 1960) depicting the Harvest, dated lower left 1923.
In the foreground a full-length portrait of a young woman with rural clothes, barefoot and a bowl full of grapes on her shoulder; it looks like she is singing, with open mouth and looking skyward. In the background , there’s a hilly landscape with a pond, three figures working under a beautiful clear sky; we do not exactly understand what they are doing, as it is hard to identify this kind of landscape that seems almost a moonscape.
This Italian artist provides in this works realistic representation of objects, in a stillness almost ecstatic, in which time appears to be blocked . The lines are precise, light, atmosphere and suspension are the elements of an almost magical setting .
Framed, in quite good condition, except some minor painting losses in the central part, to be consolidated. On the back, the canvas shows some old patches, minimal cuts already restored, see pictures. It comes from a private collection in Milan.
