St. Peter And The Rooster 17th century oil painting on canvas relined with new stretcher . The painting was probably part of a larger composition depicting the repentance of St. Peter, weeping. Italian school of the 17th century. From a dark background emerges St. Peter marked by remorse for the betrayal, but repentant, as manifested by the hand on his chest; the saint is depicted with a beard and brown hair, dressed in a brown cloak over a white tunic. The apostle’s gaze is turned upwards, towards a light of faith that overcomes darkness and illuminates the face through divine mercy and compassion. To the right of the saint we find a rooster in profile. The rooster is one of the iconographic attributes of Saint Peter the Apostle that emphasises the episode in which he denied Jesus and his subsequent repentance. Note in fact that St. Peter and the rooster are looking in the same direction, towards the light.

The work is in a good condition , with restorations consisting with its date.
